YoungMaori students will be tested on their knowledge of lyricsto Maori songs in a new game show, ‘Waiata Mai’,premiering on *PUKANA *(Maori Television on Wednesday April20 at 6.00 PM).
*PUKANA* is 100 per cent Maori languageyouth ‘edutainment’ combining entertaining segments andeducational elements with popular send-ups, comedic skits,practical information, competitions and giveaways.

In thenew ‘Waiata Mai’ segment, contestants from Te KuraKaupapa Maori o Mangere, Hato Petera College and TeWharekura o Manurewa (Auckland) as well as Te Wharekura oNgati Rongomai (Rotoiti) will compete to see who willrepresent their schools in the semi-final heats.
Thestudents are Koro Raroa, Aroha Tutakiau-Mika, Awatea Wihongiand Kearsyn Rihari (Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Mangere); MaryMareikura, Kaylene Bassett, Eldon Kake and Tanekare Mane (TeWharekura o Manurewa); Rangiwhatautau Savage, Te Rina Chase,Whakauekaipapa Savage and Takiata Curtis (Te Wharekura oNgati Rongomai); and Ihaia Nikora, Dylan Bryan, TemueraBennett and Jesse Cope (Hato Petera College).
*PUKANA*producer Pania Papa says the trick is to correctly recallsong lyrics from a variety of genres.
A selection of wellknown waiata Maori and haka are used as well as some popularchart-hitting songs such as ‘Maumahara Noa’ by BranniganKaa, ‘Whakahonohono Mai’ by 1814, ‘Kotahitanga’ byHinewehi Mohi, ‘Poi E' by Dalvanius Prime and the PateaMaori Club, ‘E Ipo’ by Prince Tui Teka and Cinco Cine'sflagship hit single 'Kei a Wai Ra' by Aaria.
“Thiscompetition will set the scene for our nationwide search fortalented young singers when we hit the road later this yearto audition for ‘Uru Whetu’ – the *PUKANA *popband,” explains Pania Papa.
“A group of talentedsingers will be brought together to record a popular hitsingle and film a video clip, following in Aaria'sfootsteps. ‘Waiata Mai’ is a great way to uncover somehidden talents and let some young stars shine!”
